Has anyone found a workaround for this update problem. Tonight 33 out of 35 machines had this message on them. If there's no workaround then I guess I'll be looking for another project.

Pete,

Once you reject the update ask you should not have any problem. Does it pop up after you reject the update confirmation?

I can answer for myself on that one, I just had the update pop up on my dimes machine (That I have do not automatically update ?), Telling me of the update and if I wanted it. When I clicked no, It then pops up saying basically that it will close and I can go download the update manually from the site and then it shuts down. So its either update now, Or its shutting down.

I tried the update a few days ago, And also couldn't get it to work as if I clicked the icon, Nothing would happen at all. So I reinstalled the older one and it works fine except for the occasional update problem.

When most of us have free time, its at the weekend... when most of the time the servers are screwed also. I think the owners/admins should start to make an effort in fixing this project. Its very difficult for me to ask others to run it when it is clearly poorly managed itself. And its becoming tiring keeping my motivation up for it also.

riptide,
You may have an issue going on that popped up a while back with the interface between DIMES and Java, as described in the following thread. Hopefully it is/will be solved in new versions of DIMES.

Yes, about every 3 hours but that can vary to as short as an hour or as long as 16 hours. I decided this morning to download 0.45 and do a manual update on each machine, when it pops up the update message. So far none of the updated machines have popped anything up at me and I did the first one about 5 hours ago so that may have fixed it.

Can updates be done via the Volunteers Control Center?

I've never tried any updating of clients through that but I do use it for reference now and again. Interesting thing I've noticed is that version 0.45 is actually shown as version 0.40 and the update box is moved to the other side of the screen.:?

Yes the most annoying thing is that the second that message pops up then Dimes ceases all measurements, its not like you can just ignore it.

Quick update ......So far I've not had a single update message from the clients that I've manually updated to 0.45 which is now the vast majority of my machines. The 0.43 versions are still popping up at me but there's only 3 or 4 left now. Starting to look a bit better, now if only we could get the stats running properly and finding a way to stop morons posting spam then we'd be in pretty good shape :)

AMEN!

It's my experience that phpbb is the most often spammed forum software out there.

Making "new user registration" a little more difficult is usually the best way to prevent this - either by implementing a somewhat difficult captcha system, or requiring some additional hoops to jump through for registration...

I've spent a lot of time in the past moderating phpbb forums that don't have sufficient blocks in place - including deletion of 2-10 new user accounts daily with profile/sig spam... NOT FUN.

Tell me about it . . .

However, THE BAN HAMMER seems to be getting things under control. I usually ban the user name, IP address, and e-mail addy all at once.
