Trace *my* traffic, not random places

Postby doncolton » Sat May 21, 2005 5:31 pm

Instead of random traceroutes, I would like an option to have you sniff my network traffic and add IP addresses to my queue. Trace them. Then DIMES would show me the network that *I* use, rather than some small fraction of the network that is "out there."

I plan to use DIMES as a first day of class activity for a networking class I will teach this fall (end of August), and I would love to have each computer configured that way. When we start class, I have them start DIMES. Then I have them surf a bit, check email, maybe do some other web-related things, and finally look at the resulting pictures. Then we would talk about the meaning of "net" and how far the traffic travels to get there and back.

Maybe it a pipe dream, but I think it would be way cool for the students. - Don

It is cool, though...

Hi Don, thanks for your suggestion.
Actually it is a cool suggestion.
Our main worry though is that people will be deterred if it will be concieved that the program sniffs their traffic, even if it is just an option that is off by default.
However, perhaps we should think of creating a special version that will have this feature (maybe an educational version) for those interested.
We will discuss this issue and see if and how it gets into our work-plan.
If you want to be updated, please send me an email to shire@eng.tau.ac.il,
Cheers,
Eran

I agree, this sounds like a really cool idea and I would be up for it. However as stated, thoes more privacy consious might take it the wrong way and or argue that since users are requiered to register, DIMES now contains a database of where they've been and "how" they got there.

Yes yes, just an option disable by default and anonymous :-)

I agree with Doncolton suggestion: it would be a usefull option for education purpose.

What's funny is when someone first explained this project to me, I thought this was exactly what it did. I think putting together an educational release with this capability is a great idea ;)
