New iMac

Postby John Greer » Sat Jun 18, 2011 8:18 pm

Hi. I just got a new iMac and downloaded the MAC version of Dimes. I see the icon in the dock and I see the program running, but I never set my username and pw. I click on it and nothing happens. Help!!! How do I get it to respond?

John,
Officially speaking, there is no DIMES version for mac. Or, more precisely, there is no Mac version that has been developed for Mac OS X. There are plans currently to bring back support for Mac, but they are fraught with technical difficulties (we do not own a mac, and we have no one capable of cross-compiling the C code of our network stack for the mac)

I can offer you three courses of action that may work, from the lighter to the more intense:
1. Try the Linux version of Agent 0.5.5.3. Mac OS X is based on FreeBSD Linux, and so the linux version *may* work on it (we've never tried it)
2. Try to manually install the Linux version of Agent 0.5.5.1, which comes as a tarball from our site. Again, no guaranties that this would work. But at least if it doesn't you'll know the problem is with the Agent itself, not the installer.
3. If you are technologically savvy, you can always try to rebuild the thing from scratch on your own machine. We'd be happy to supply you with all the source code (Java and C), and if you manage it, we will forever immortalize your name on our site (assuming you donate the work back to us) BTW, this offer is open to any and all who read this :)

Sorry I can't offer you any better solutions.

Boaz,

I choose option 3!

Are the compilers builtin?

John,
I'm not sure what you mean by built-in. We use the standard Sun Java compiler (javac) as part of our eclipse development environment, and C compilers are, of course, unique to each environment.
Please send me your email in a PM and I can get you all the details/code

... so I'm now running Dimes as a WinXP virtual guest on the Mac using VirtualBox. Dimes runs pretty good under it, but at times just stops.

What does this mean: Warning: Files exchange stopped - an I/O problem.
or this: Warning: Scheduler Task failed - No answer from server

Is this a problem on my side or on the server side?

Assuming this only happens occasionally that is most likely a server problem.

Again, the question is do you see this all the time (IE, you never get statistics) or do you see it sporadically. The Server has been acting a bit lately, so it is conceivable that you'd see this quite often, but there should still be times when the statistics do work

Sorry for not explaining totally. :|

This is consistent. I haven't been able to record any results from this Virtual Guest in about a week.
My Native Windows Agent is recording, so I don't think it's the Server.

Does this message imply a network problem or an internal Agent problem?

It is usually indicative of a sever problem

It's been many, many weeks now since DIMES was able to connect to the outside world via VirtualBox.
I try it a few times each day and always the same thing.
All other apps can see the internet.
Are there any other diagnostics I can run to pinpoint my problem?

Woops. John, I must have missed your message in the general melee until it just popped back up because someone spam-threaded it...
To answer your question, at this point I would actually recommend waiting for the next version of the Agent, which is going to be a separate service and GUI design. - A lot of the problems we have had with the mac had been gui issues, so hopefully this will help address them
Thanks for your patience, and again sorry for the late reply
