All:
One of our upcoming projects will be taking another look at the way the DIMES agent runs on different platforms. In particular, we will be focusing on running under Windows Vista, Linux, and Mac OS X, and we want your input. If you know of a bug or odd behavior by the Agent under these systems, please post it here. Please follow these guidelines to make it as easy as possible for us to find (and hopefully, fix) your bug.
1. BE SPECIFIC! saying something like "Agent isn't working" is not very helpful. Tell us exactly what's happening (or not happening.) Are there any messages in the messages window (particularly warnings and exceptions.) And how is this different than what you expect to see. See below for an example of a "good" bug report.
2. Give exact details of your system and agent version. Including what SP are you using, if applicable. What distribution are you using, if applicable. etc. List any additional information that you think might help.
3. Read the bugs that are already posted before posting a new bug. If you see "your" bug already posted, don't post it again. You can (and should) reply to the original post if you have new information to add, or if you think the bug is not real.
4. The DIMES agent is an Open-Source project. If you wish to try to solve any of the bugs reported here, you are most welcome to do so. Just post the code on the site, or, if it's too long, tell us you have a submission. And we will review it. If your code is accepted, it will be incorporated into future versions of the agent with your name on it. (The Agent code is available to install when you install the agent. )
Example:
Problem: "Graph is not working when running for first time in Ubuntu. I can see the Cactus, but no links. The statistics are still going up, so the agent is probably working. When I restart the agent, the problem goes away, but it comes back when I restart the machine. There are no unusual messages in the messages window"
System: Ubuntu Linux, Version 8.04 (Hardy Heron) running Gnome2.22.3
Additional information: This computer also runs Knoppix 5.3.1, where the problem does not occur. Seems like this is a problem with Gnome.
Thank you in advance, we look forward to hearing from you,
Boaz H.
