Two problems, possibly related

Postby John Greer » Sun Aug 26, 2007 2:41 pm

I have two problems, which I mention in the same post, because they may be related (or not)...

  1. What does "Display Server Stopped" mean? I haven't seen any results in quite a long time and everytime I look in the messages window, I see "Display Server Stopped"
  2. My log and results directory are huge.
C:\Program Files\DIMES\Agent\Classes\Base\Outgoing\log contains over 85 thousand entries, is 19.4 GB and goes back 20 days.
Edit: btw - I'm running DIMES for Windows 0.4.5 and JAVA 1.6.0_02 (1.6.0_02-b06)

Not probably something you want to hear, but I had to go back to v0.4.3b and Java 5.11 to get good production. Not sure why, but I couldn't overcome those errors you mention with the newer client and the new Java. :(

Hi John,

Are you using the Linux version?

The problem with the files will be fixed in the coming WIN version.

We'll work on fixing the Linux version soon.

It also seems that your Linux env vars are not set properly.
Check if the DISPLAY variable is set.

I'm using Win v0.4.5. Would this fix be newer than Win version 0.4.5?

How do I check/change the DISPLAY variable?

Also, any idea why the logs sometimes get so large? It happened again yesterday, over 14GB.

The problem with the huge log folder will be fixed in the coming version.

The DISPLAY var is only relevant for Unix users...we'll try to check this error, and let you know.

I re-downloaded and re-installed on Friday.

The agent seems to be working, I can see activity in the main graph window and I see no errors in the messages window.

However, I do not see any stats being updated, as you can see below in my epilog - which has been stuck at 2,402,931 for over a month.

Please announce it on the forums and/or front page when you do release it, and if anyone out of the lab manages to upgrade successfully please let us know. Those (many) of us familiar with the updated-version-doesn't-run-must-roll-back-to-old-version pattern are refusing the update. As mentioned elsewhere the update prompt is happening frequently today, but that could be because of server restarts for all we know. We've had to ignore the update prompt for many months to keep running our agents at all...

I've upgraded all my Windows 0.4.4 service-mode clients to 0.4.5 without problem.

I have run 0.4.5 on Java 1.4.2, 1.5, and 1.6 in both systray agent mode and service-mode without issues now. I think I always uninstall the old client before installing the new one.

The biggest hurdle is when the registration server(s) are flaky or down - at which point I usually cannot re-register the agent after upgrade :(

Edit: BTW, the minimum windows version requirements can be safely reduced to Windows NT4 SP6a w/IE4 in case anyone is interested ;)

Edit2: I should probably also mention that I *never* install Dimes in C:\Program Files any more... Ever since the Java 1.6 issue, I make sure there's never a space in the path.
