Access to the Internet Delay Service

Postby Florin Coras » Thu Apr 16, 2009 2:17 pm

Hello,

I'm a student working at my bachelor degree thesis, and I am investigating the performances of two mapping systems for the likely to be introduced Locator/ID Separation Protocol. For this purpose I am implementing a Perl simulator, however I will need to be able to get the delay between any 2 POPs in the internet(their IP addresses).
I noticed that you have implemented an Internet Delay Service which I was not able to test it due to some java errors, therefore I don't know if my request (that of finding the delay between any 2 POPs) is solvable.
So I'm kindly asking for your help: first I would like to know if the service that you implemented would be able to help my cause and second if an API for the Internet Delay Service is available.

Thank you in advance for any help!

Best regards,
Florin

Hi Florin,

you are right - we are currently working to fix the problem in the delay service, it should be up soon.
the service doesn't show you the exact distance between 2 POPs - well, sometimes it does, if the have a measurement between them - but in most cases we approximate it based on more than 1 measurement between different pairs of IPs. We believe that our approximation is accurate enough in most cases, but sometimes it is not and also there are pairs of IPs (lets say 11-12% according to our testing) for which we fail to provide any approximation.
We'll appreciate if you could use it and let us know what you think about results you get, and hope it will be helpful for your research.
After we fix the bug of course :)

Good luck,
Galina

Hi Galina,

As soon as the API is up and running (and of course if I can integrate it into my perl simulator) I'll be more than happy to give you feedback.
Thank you for the information and good luck with fixing the bug!

Best regards,
Florin

Hi Florin,

the web interface is fixed, you can use it by calling the following URL with your IPs:
http://www.netdimes.org/DistanceServer/ ... .185.32.93

as for perl API - lets disscuss it by e-mail
please send your suggestions to galina@eng.tau.ac.il
